Toledo apartment fire ruled accidental

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – A massive fire at the Tanglewood Apartments on Reynolds Road in Toledo was classified as accidental last week, according to a spokesman for the Toledo Fire and Rescue Division. The two-alarm fire displaced dozens of residents and destroyed 16 units, but luckily no one was injured in the fire. However, an exact cause has not been determined.

According to TFRD, windy conditions during the day caused the fire to move rapidly throughout the building. The first on-site crews worked to prioritize evacuation of the building’s residents. Pvt. Sterling Rahe of the department said the fact that the fire happened in the afternoon rather than overnight made it a lot easier, as most residents were awake or not at home at the time.

Two hours after the first call, the roof collapsed and all firefighters were ordered to evacuate the building and put themselves in a defensive position. They stayed there for hours after the main fire was extinguished to put out any hot spots when they emerged. About 85 firefighters helped respond.

A total of 14 families were displaced as a result of the fire. The Red Cross is currently supporting these families and monetary donations can be made to the organization to help.
