The 13-year-old Adam Toledo family plans to open an “Adam Place” to help endangered children – NBC Chicago
The family of a 13-year-old boy who was shot dead by the Chicago Police Department wants to respect his memory by creating a nonprofit to help children at risk.
Adam Toledo’s family announced on Wednesday that he would have been 14 years old.
“Adam was 13 years old. He deserves to celebrate his 14th birthday here now. “Birthday with his friends and family,” said his sister Esmeralda Toledo. “He was just a kid who found his way around the world and he deserves the opportunity to make mistakes and learn from them.”
The boy was shot dead by a Chicago police officer two months ago after chasing his foot in an alley. The incident was captured on a body cam video and the release of the footage caused violent backlash and anger.
“This Little Village child is the youngest victim to be shot dead by the Chicago Police Department in the past three decades,” said attorney Adina Weiss Ortiz.
During the launch of a new mural to celebrate Toledo’s life near Ogden and Lawndale, the family shared a vision of opening Adams Place in a small town in Potosi, Wisconsin, more than three and a half hours from Chicago.
“We want Adams Place to be a place where boys like Adam take care of them and make friends who don’t bother them,” Weiss said on behalf of Toledo’s mother. I did.
Elizabeth “Betty” Toledo is still saddened by her son’s death and was unable to speak at a press conference on Wednesday afternoon. Attorney Adina Weiss Ortiz read a letter from Toledo’s mother.
“What I really want is to get Adam back, but I can’t,” said Wyeth. “But we can try to help other families protect their son from the temptations that brought Adam onto the streets that night.”
Adam’s Place’s goal is to serve vulnerable teenagers in Chicago and the Midwest in a farm-like rural setting. A family lawyer said the idea came from another successful program called Boys Farm in Newberry, South Carolina.
Providing safe shelter for boys who find themselves in difficult and difficult times, Boys Farm has a variety of programs and resources on the farm to help them grow and overcome these challenges. Do.
“I think Adam’s Place is everything Adam wanted and more than he could have imagined,” said Wyeth.
The family hopes to launch Adams Place sometime in September and be operational by next summer.
Regarding the police investigation, a family attorney said he had no gun in hand when Toledo was shot. Chicago police say they found the gun nearby and threw their guns behind the fence while Toledo fled police. City police are still investigating the shooting and no recommendations have been made at this time.
