Renovated BBQ restaurant reopens in northwest Ohio

The Fremont Restaurant has been open for more than 8 years after full-time minister Jimmy Gippert learned how to smoke meat to raise funds for church missions.

FREMONT, Ohio – Are you hungry?

It’s Easter week so we thought it would be the perfect time to talk about some of the best barbecues in northwest Ohio, Jimmy G’s Barbeque.

“We started running farmers’ markets to fund missions and various charities, and the Fremont people were asking for more. They said you had to open a restaurant,” said owner Jimmy Gippert.

After learning how to smoke meat full-time to fundraise for missions and bless local organizations, full-time Secretary Jimmy Gippert decided to go legit and started Jimmy G’s Barbeque eight and a half years ago in Fremont.

Since then, they have refined and expanded their menu and now offer meat, brisket burgers and sandwich specialties with six homemade BBQ sauces as well as meat from the region.

“We get a lot of endorsement from people who know good grilling and love this place,” said Jimmy’s daughter Hope.

Jimmy G’s also occasionally works with local nonprofits, groups, or charities and offers a special meal where the proceeds are used for that group.

Jimmy G’s currently employs 16 people and was able to stay open during the pandemic through delivery orders and thanks to a lucky time for the installation of a drive-through window in early March 2020.

“It was under construction for a long time and then we finally said to my dad, ‘You should do this.’ And then he finally did it, and like a week later everything could be shut down to not eat. So it was the perfect timing. “Said Hope.

Waiting for years to save enough money to renovate their space, the Gipperts held a major reopening event last week after a three week renovation.

Jimmy says the dining area better reflects his personal mission to promote love and authenticity in the community through his food, friendship and service.

“Where we can show the love of God and interact with our community in ways we really couldn’t when we were in full-time service,” Jimmy said

Jimmy G’s Barbeque is open Tuesday to Thursday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
