Northwest Ohio’s Teacher of the Year offers tips to get kids ready

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – It’s time to prepare the kids for going back to school, both mentally and physically preparing them for the new school year.

Dr. Katie Peters has been teaching for almost 20 years. In 2012 she was named Teacher of the Year in Northwest Ohio.

Dr. Peters is an English teacher at Whitmer High School, so she knows a thing or two about preparing kids for class.

“The world itself seems really restless and our children feel very restless as a result. So one thing we can do to really prepare our children for going back to school is to allow them to process themselves and not feel rushed, ”she said. “That means in the week before school, you prepare yourself with school supplies, our bedtime, we wake up a little earlier so that they feel safe in their routine that day, and they don’t feel this fear, the children sometimes carry around with you. “
