TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) – A man accused of fatally shot and killed a University of Toledo football player after a fight at a city pizzeria this week has been charged with murder, authorities said.

Michael Mitchell Jr., 24, of Toledo, was arrested Wednesday afternoon and was due to appear in court for the first time on Thursday. It was not known whether he hired a lawyer.

Mitchell shot and killed 22-year-old Jahneil Douglas at around 11 p.m. on Tuesday, authorities said. The restaurant’s general manager told The Toledo Blade that Douglas and another person started an argument right outside the entrance and an argument ensued, although it is not clear whether Mitchell was the other person.

Before the police arrived at the scene, someone drove Douglas to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later, the authorities said.

No further injuries were reported during the altercation.

Douglas was preparing for his junior season with the Rockets. He was a defensive lineman who had played 12 games in two seasons, two tackles total.
