Lucas County Children Services, Toledo Public Schools families receive holiday help

Two US $ 40,000 donations from Laborers Local 500 and their Associated General Contractors partners will be used to help families in the area.

TOLEDO, Ohio – Lucas County’s childcare service and elementary school families in the Toledo Public Schools District are receiving assistance this holiday season.

Two $ 40,000 donations from Laborers Local 500 and their Associated General Contractors partners will help provide Thanksgiving meals for families at Pickett Academy, Robinson Elementary and Achievement Schools, and toys for foster children.

“We thought about how we can better promote workers and contractors who give back to the community.” said David Fleetwood with the Local 500.

The Lucas County Children Service case workers have been told to go back to their children and tell them they can have anything they want for Christmas.

“We usually ask our case workers to have modest expectations about gifts, and this year we can pretty much tell them that the sky’s the limit! And that’s just amazing, ”said Julie Malkin of LCCS.

Lucas County Children Services has seen its case numbers go up and down this year. Right now, her case numbers are back to where they were before the pandemic, but their numbers were down during distance learning in the spring.

“When the children were sent home from school to avoid being seen by teachers and other assigned reporters, we found that our calls were decreasing. But as soon as school started again, the calls came, ”Malkin said.

Malkin says this donation will help many local children have a normal Christmas

TPS principals agreed that their families rely heavily on food and that it means a lot to know that they will have a normal Thanksgiving festival.

“Our families are probably hardest hit by the pandemic and food shortages. It’s just very important that I, as the administrator, know that our families are being looked after, ” M James Jones from Robinson Elementary and Robinson Achievement.

Those planning to pick up these Thanksgiving merchandise can stop by the Pickett Academy from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm and Robinson’s from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm on Thursdays and Fridays
