Is there a grocery store in eastern Toledo?

Woodville Road Save-a-Lot closed two months ago. It was Miles’ only place with fresh ingredients.

Toledo, Ohio – Two months ago Save-a-Lot finally closed its door on Woodville Road in east Toledo.

Save-a-Lot was the last store in the area that sold fresh produce.

The lack of access to fresh products has led to so-called food deserts.

“”[There’s] There is no fresh food or vegetables in the area, ”said Alfonso Narvaez, a community activist trying to raise awareness of the issue.

The shortage of food resources is currently putting a heavy strain on local residents.

Change is devastating, especially for non-drivers.

Chris Eames is one of those locals who do not have access to a car and grocery shopping has become very difficult for him and his family, he says.

“It makes a huge difference in my life, which means that I have to walk all the way to the Toledo Food Center, which seems like the best place,” said Eames.

The Eames Walk is a 16-minute one-way hike just to get food for the family.

And not only does it lose a place for fresh groceries, but grocery store closures have other serious implications for the wider community.

“It’s just a loss of work, a loss of economic development, and a loss of pride in the neighborhood,” Narvaez said.

It’s a frustrating time for neighbors in the area as they don’t see a quick fix.

They say that doing an important business like a grocery store means getting an important job done.

Another Woodville Road resident Anthony Kazumalek said the root of the problem lies in businesses that don’t want to stay in the area.

“We have to revitalize the region. We have to rebuild. We need incentives to bring the company back here, ”said Kazumalek.

Currently, the Toledo Food Market on Main Street and the Kroger and Meyer Stores in Oregon are the closest stores selling fresh produce to the area.
