FBI asking questions about Summit Street reconstruction in downtown Toledo

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – The FBI is asking the City of Toledo some questions about the downtown Summit Street rebuilding project. The information comes from two independent sources who spoke to the 13abc I team on condition of anonymity. The scope and exact information that investigators are looking for is not yet clear.

It’s the project to transform part of the downtown Toledo waterfront, the multi-million dollar rebuilding of Summit Street from Lafayette to Jackson Street. New traffic patterns, new water pipes and new landscaping are part of the project, which is expected to be completed this summer when Toledo welcomes the world’s best women golfers during the Solheim Cup.

The anonymous sources who know about the project told the 13abc I team that FBI agents have been talking to the city of Toledo about the project for the past few weeks. An FBI spokeswoman told the I-Team on Monday that it was her policy not to confirm or reject any ongoing investigation.

This project, like so many others, had delays due to COVID-19 in 2020. At this point we also learned that the price of the project was going to increase. Originally, the project was supposed to cost around $ 7.5 million.

In May last year, the city government returned to the city council asking for new debentures and bonds totaling $ 10.5 million. 13abc was told that the scope of the project has changed and the design plans have evolved, which is responsible for the change.

To be clear, no one has been charged with a crime, and nothing can ever come of this. But questions are asked at a fairly high level.

We asked a spokesman for the city of Toledo for comment on Monday. We received a Tuesday morning.

“We are very proud of the work on Summit Street that will transform this part of downtown and prepare us for an international sporting event coming to Toledo this year. If there are any questions, we will of course fully cooperate with them, the competent authorities ”, said the spokesman for the city of Toledo, Ignazio Messina, to the 13abc I team.
