Crest kicker Evan Davis commits to Toledo – Sports – Shelby Star

Another honor for Crest baseball player Riley Cheek

Crest high-kicker Evan Davis announced on Twitter on Sunday that he had committed to accepting a scholarship offer from Toledo University.

Davis is a 5-foot-8, 158-pounder who will be a senior this fall. He is in his fourth year as a Chargers kicker.

In his first three seasons, Davis has 214 points, 139 extra points and 25 field goals and has the chance to end his career as the school’s absolute leader in all three categories for kick scorers.

The current front runner is Alex Trejo, who had 326 points, 233 extra points and 31 field goals from 2011 to 2014.

Davis has also scored three field goals of 40 yards or more, including a 40-yarder in the 2015 Crest State Championship win over Southern Durham.

High school baseball

Riley Cheek of Crest High was named to the American Family Insurance all-state baseball team by USA Today last week.

A second team pick, Cheek hit .349 with eight home runs and 31 RBIs and was 10-1 as a pitcher for the Chargers, who finished as NC 3A runners-up for the second straight season.

Cheek has been named Big South 3A Conference Player of the Year and has signed up for the Charlotte 49ers. He currently plays for the regular season champions of the NC Area IV Eastern Division of Shelby Post 82.

Legion baseball
Cherryville 15, Hickory 0 (5 innings): Brent Walls (three innings), Seth Willis (one) and Chris Moxley (one) combined the shutout for Cherryville (21-5, 13-2), who will receive Maiden on Tuesday.

Gastonia 5, Kings Mountain 0: Slayton Fletcher hit a triple and Austin Mitchell had a hit and two RBIs for Gastonia (10-7, 9-6), who visits Lincoln County on Tuesday and receives Mint Hill on Wednesday at 2pm. Kings Mountain (1-16, 1-15) will host Huntersville on Tuesday.

Rutherfordton 2, Boiling Springs 1: Rutherfordton takes the 11-12 year old District 1 Little League title.

The first Tee of the Foothills had its tournament on Monday on the River Bend YMCA Golf Course. The results are as follows:

Boiling Springs 7, Rutherfordton 1: After the 9-2 win with Aidan Ledbetter (16 of 18), Boiling Springs won the 9-10 year title in District 1 and entered the state tournament that started on Saturday.
